The Women’s Cancer Resource Center invites you to join us for an evening with Sandra Steingraber, who will address “Fracking our Bodies: Cancer Prevention in an Age of Extreme Fossil Fuel Extraction.”
Dr. Sandra Steingraber will describe the link between fossil fuels — their extraction, combustion and use as the raw materials for petrochemicals — and cancer. And perhaps most importantly, she will demonstrate how cancer survivors can lead the way to green energy and green chemistry.
This free event will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 7-8:30 pm at La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley.

The event was funded by the generosity of the Ceres Foundation, Breast Cancer Fund, and Sandra Steingraber.

Registration is required.

Pleasanton, California, March 30, 2012:

The Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation (SJWHTF) expresses gratitude to numerous individuals, sponsors, local and downtown merchants and volunteers on the Foundation’s 4th annual Ragin’ Cajun this past March 2. The event attendees opened their hearts and wallets by generating a whopping $105,000 for future grants. This equates to 1,500 treatments. Ragin’ Cajun sold out eleven days prior to the event with 350 attendees.

Many attendees dressed in their Mardi Gras attire ranging from colorful vests, hats and ties to plumes of feathered boas, beads and masks. Many wore intricate and ornate masks walking in mystery amongst party attendees enhancing the Mardi Gras vibe and experience. The event was attended by guests that crossed many generations which made it great fun.

Photos of attendees can be viewed on the Foundation’s website, as well as some local newspaper’s websites and regional magazine’s website. Photography provided by Bob Henry and Yolanda Weaver.

“Starting this Foundation came about from my own struggles dealing with cancer. As a recent five year survivor, I know too well the pain cancer patients endure and caregivers go through when dealing with chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The Foundation provides a means to lessen that burden and suffering with complementary therapies,” states Sandra. J. Wing, the Founder. “It is with deep appreciation and humility that the Foundation has been supported by the community, neighbors, family, friends and generous caring donors and sponsors.”

The physical and emotional benefits from the various therapies that the SJWHTF grants provide are measurable from a physician’s perspective. “Many newly diagnosed cancer patients become anxious and distressed, decreasing their will to fight the battle with cancer. Visual and guided imagery and deep breathing mediation vastly helps make peace with their diagnosis, increases their inner strength and provides the weapons to slay their cancer,” says Rishi Sawhney, MD, Director of the Cancer Center at Valley Medical Oncology Consultants.

He is also assistant professor of Medicine at UC Davis Cancer Network. “In some cases, during chemotherapy neuropathy occurs where there is pain in the hands and feet, acupuncture helps to alleviate these symptoms more effectively than standard medications,” says Dr. Sawhney.

To date 124 grants have been granted. This past January, SJWHTF celebrated its 100th grant recipient which is a milestone. Additional details are available from previous press releases on our website, www.healingtherapiesfoundation.org.

Save the date for next year’s 5th annual Ragin’ Cajun on Friday, March 8 at thePalmEventCenter. Additional details with be forthcoming as the date approaches.

The mission of the Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation (SJWHTF) is to provide cancer patients, during their treatment period, with financial assistance for complementary healing services.

Complementary and integrative healing therapies include: acupuncture, acupressure, therapeutic massage, deep breathing meditation and visualization. These healing therapies can provide relief for neuropathy, anxiety, stress, aches, fatigue, nausea and pain.

The foundation originally was founded as a Charitable Fund under the Tri-Valley Community Foundation in August 2008. On August 2010, it became a 501 (c) (3) status non-profit foundation based inPleasanton,CA. It currently has over 100 volunteers.
