Chemo Day - By Joanne Byrne
Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Joanne Byrne is a friend who is living with cancer. She is sharing her beautiful poem, entitled: Chemo Day. Thanks Joanne! Feel free to share a poem about your experience with cancer too.

CHEMO DAY

Monitors beep. Nurses scurry. IV bags and rubber gloves. Needles and Noise. Warm blankets and quiet conversation.

This silent ritual set to the rhythm of my ipod and to the silence of my rambling thoughts, fears hope, confusion awe and wonder at it all.

Who was I before this? Was there ever a before? Or was before just a ramp up to now?
In some odd way I am more at peace, now, than at any other point in my life How can this be?

How can there be peace In the company of this unwelcome house guest?

Maybe the peace comes from finally realizing that all of this is in someone else’s hands, but how I handle it, what grace I bring to the table, is solely in mine.

When the fear crawls in, late at night and lingers at the corner of my soul, I know my task is, by the light of day to grab the broom And sweep out the fear Push out the doubts, toss the anger Out the door.

Sweep every day and clear the decks For positive thoughts laughter, joy and grace.

This new world of mine. Full of needles, wires and noise Is a gift given to me, to make me well, To teach me about myself, And to remind me constantly Of how fortunate I am To love and be loved.
